"Invest In Your Community"

The Decatur County Community Foundation is committed to serving donors whose philanthropic goals focus on enhancing the quality of life in our local community, forever. The DCCF is able to do this because of its permanent endowments that preserve the principle while paying out a percentage of income to support ongoing sources. The key to giving to the DCCF is flexibility; gifts can be of any size, gifts can be made to any existing fund, gifts can be for a broad unrestricted purpose or you can start your own fund (See how to start your own fund on this website.) -Listed below are numerous ways to make contributions.

Members of the DCCF Board unveil the new entrance created at the Decatur County Park. This entrance is a part of the Legacy for Decatur County… a path to the future. As a visible tribute to those who have made planned gift, yearly the DCCF will make an addition to beautify a walking path in Decatur County. The DCCF has over 100 funds benefiting specific charities, scholarships, areas of interest and the unrestricted competitive grant program. A donor can give any amount at any time to any of to any existing fund. Students from all over Decatur County benefit from the DCCF’s thank a teacher program. This grant program supports teachers with funding to do classroom projects that might otherwise not be part of their budget. Donors can support the fund by making donations in honor of their favorite teacher. The teacher receives a card to let them know of your support and the thank a teacher fund grows to allow us to make an even larger impact on education in Decatur County.

Current Gifts

Gifts of Cash: Cash, usually in the form of a check, is the most common and simplest method. Gifts can be any amount. Many times donors use these gifts to recognize others. Consider the following options:

In honor: recognize a birthday, anniversary, retirement, Christmas or any other special occasion with a gift to the honoree’s favorite fund. The DCCF will mail the person a card recognizing the occasion.

In memory: Honor a person’s life with a gift that will last forever. The DCCF will notify the family of your kind remembrance.

Thank a Teacher: Recognize your child’s teacher or one who has made an impact with a gift that gives back. The teacher receives acknowledgement of your gift and the money is used to support the thank a teacher program that makes grants to local classroom teachers.

To make your cash gift you can make checks payable to the DCCF, note the name of the fund in the memo line and mail to:

Appreciated Securities:

The transfer of appreciated securities is an excellent option for giving to a community foundation. When using securities as a gift, you may generally take a charitable deduction on your income taxes for the full market value of the securities as of the date of the gift. You also may avoid the payment of capital gains taxes on the sale of the securities.

Future Gifts

Bequests: Donors may incorporate a gift to the Foundation in their will. In order to provide for loved ones while at the same time giving back to the community, donors may choose to describe a specific amount or percentage bequest, or a contingent bequest.

Charitable Remainder Trust: Donors may choose to place specific assets in a trust to provide annuity income for themselves and/or a spouse during their lifetime. The balance in the trust after the annuity is no longer paid goes to the Foundation. A current income tax deduction is allowed for the remainder value, as determined by the IRS.

Charitable Lead Trust: A charitable lead trust is similar to a remainder trust, but the periodic payments are made to the Foundation first, for a set term of years. What remains in the trust at the end of the term reverts back to the donor and/or other beneficiaries. For some donors, this is an effective means of fulfilling philanthropic goals while reducing or eliminating certain types of tax.

Life Insurance: The gift can be given to charity when the donor no longer needs the insurance. The DCCF can be named the beneficiary.

Qualified Retirement Plan: These funds are subject to both state and federal income tax if in an estate. Giving this type of gift to the DCCF can reduce estate taxes.

The Legacy for Decatur County

…a Path to the Future makes it easy for your legacy to make a difference for future generations in Decatur County. You decide what you want your money to support, work with a professional advisor and then inform the DCCF of your decision. It is then the responsibility of the DCCF to make sure your legacy lives forever.

Legacy Options

Gifts to the Legacy Society can be:
• Bequests
• IRA/401K designation
• Life Insurance
• Charitable trusts

Making the Legacy Work

As a donor to the DCCF, you can choose the charity or charitable intent for your gift or you may chose to leave the gift to the discretion of the DCCF, who will use it to meet whatever are the most pressing community needs of the time. A Legacy gift can be of any size. A gift of $10,000 or more can be named.

You and your professional advisor will work with the DCCF to create an agreement that will allow us to make your legacy last forever.

Honoring the Gift

The Legacy for Decatur County is partnering with the Decatur County Parks & Recreation to build a path to the future. To recognize individuals who choose to leave a legacy with the DCCF, the DCCF will make an addition, such as a bench, plants, artwork, or picnic table, to the path system in Decatur County. If the donor chooses, the names of individuals who left legacies in that year will be recognized near that year’s addition.

Also, anyone who chooses to leave a Legacy will receive a medallion that can be used on a gravestone to show your generosity, forever. All new gifts will be recognized in the DCCF annual report.
