Updated: Nov 25, 2020

In 2001, the Decatur County Board of Directors established the Stephen Decatur Society. The purpose of the society is to recognize and honor those persons who have made outstanding and continuing contributions to the efforts of charity and philanthropy in Decatur County.

The Foundation’s annual meeting was held June 18, 2001, where Herb Scheidler was honored as the first member of the Stephen Decatur Society Award presenter Bill Robbins noted that Herb Scheidler’s charitable influence in Decatur County has been far-reaching through his longtime involvement with Hospice, Meals-on-Wheels, Cheer Fund, St. Mary’s Church, and many other local organizations, including the Decatur County Community Foundation. Mr. Scheidler served tirelessly and unselfishly as the Foundation’s first Executive Director from 1993 through the end of 1999. During his six years of volunteer service, the Decatur County Community Foundation grew from endowment assets of zero to more than $6 million.
